A promenade enveloped in brocaded light.

Nakajima Park is beloved as the Central Park of Sapporo for its perfect location, size, and varied seasonal beauty.

Autumn is particularly beautiful with golden ginkgo tree-lined lanes against the clear blue sky, the sight of which stirs the heart and leaves a vivid impression. Another breathtaking sight awaits with the surrounding brilliant colors reflected in Iris Pond like a mirror.

This autumn, Nakajima Park will be illuminated to celebrate this colorful season, transforming it into a dreamlike vision of the night.

There is plenty to see, such as the ethereal reflection of the Hassoan teahouse in the pond around the Japanese garden, the autumn foliage corridor illuminated by the lights from the Hoheikan, and more.

A visit here is sure to make you fall in love with Sapporo all over again.

It's time to head out and enjoy a dreamy autumn evening at Nakajima Park.

Illumination Areas

❶ Ginkgo Tree Lane
A beautiful ginkgo tree-lined lane stretches from Sapporo Ekimae-dori Avenue to the main entrance of the park. It is thought that these trees were planted after the Semi-Centennial Exhibition held in 1918. This spot is particularly beautiful, and is the perfect place to welcome guests to the illumination festival at Nakajima Park.
❷ Iris Pond
This spot was originally used to store lumber sent downstream on the Toyohira River in the early pioneer days of Hokkaido, and named Motoemon Canal after Suzuki Motoemon, who handled construction. The two original square canals were later joined when building the park, a teahouse was added, and the shape gradually evolved into what it is today. A walking path was built around the pond, offering visitors beautiful views of the scenery.
❸ Hoheikan
(Historical Guest House)
Hoheikan is the first Western-style hotel built in Japan to coincide with the Emperor's visit in 1881. It was originally located on former Odori Nishi 1-chome, but relocated to Nakajima Park in 1958 when the TV tower was built. During the illumination period, geiko perform dances and matcha grinding here.
❹ Japanese Garden
This spot was built over the course of two years, starting in 1961 with the goal of crafting an authentic Japanese garden in Hokkaido. It is a typical Japanese garden with an artificial hill, a pond and a walkway, as well as features inscribed stones from across Hokkaido, 12 stone lanterns from Kyoto, and Hassoan, a teahouse designated as an important cultural asset by the Japanese government. When illuminated, the colorful autumn foliage reflected on the surface of the water is beautiful.
